Overview: With a 7-minute Punch Rounding rule, when an employee punches, their time is rounded to the nearest quarter-hour increment. If they punch between 0-7 minutes past the quarter-hour mark, it's rounded down, and if it's 8-14 minutes past, it's rounded up.

Common Use Case: The 7-minute rule is a commonly used payroll rule that allows employers to round employee time to the nearest quarter hour when tracking hours in 15-minute increments. The rule is part of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and helps employers avoid violating minimum wage and overtime requirements.

Important: Punches will only be rounded in real-time. If an employee punches and selects time or manually adds a punch, it will not be rounded. An employee can only be assigned to one punch rounding rule at a time.

Set up the 7-Minute Punch Rounding Rule

1. First, to set up Punch Rounding, start by clicking Settings --> Punch Rounding:

2. Once on the Punch Rounding page, click +Add a New Punch Rounding Rule:

3. To have punches rounded based on time for the 7-Minute Rounding rule, choose the "By Time" option. Next, specify punches will round to the "Nearest". Finally, enter the increment of "15", like so:

4. You may or may not want punch-outs to follow the same 7-minute rounding rule as your punch-ins. To follow the same rule, set up the Round Punches "Out" section the same as the "ins" above. To not round punch outs, select the "Do Not Round" option. To set something else up, please see greater Punch Rounding steps.

5. Lastly, assign the appropriate employees and Save once done.

FAQ:

Q: Why are punches not being rounded?

A: If you have punch rounding enabled, but punches aren't rounding then the punches likely aren't being made in real-time. Punching rounding only applies to punches made in real-time.

Q: Can I round to the schedule instead?

A: Yes, if you have Scheduling, on the Pro Plan or up, you can follow the steps here to round punches by the schedule instead.
