Instructions:
What is Clopening?
A "clopening" shift is when an employee closes a location one night and then opens it the next morning, leaving them with little to no time to rest in between. For example, an employee might finish a closing shift at midnight and then be required to return for an opening shift at 6 AM.
Why it's a problem worth highlighting:
Employee health & wellbeing- Insufficient rest between shifts disrupts sleep, increases fatigue, and can lead to burnout over time. Most sleep experts recommend 7–9 hours of sleep, which a clopening shift makes nearly impossible.
Safety risks- Tired employees are more prone to errors and workplace accidents, which is a liability concern for employers.
Morale and retention- Clopening shifts are a common source of employee frustration and dissatisfaction. They can contribute to higher turnover, which is costly for businesses.
Legal and compliance exposure- Some states and cities have predictive scheduling laws that require a minimum rest period between shifts (often 10–11 hours). Clopening shifts can inadvertently put companies out of compliance.
